OC RYSE is a performance poetry competition for high school-aged students from across Orange County and the surrounding area. The goal of OC RYSE is to increase the exposure of poetry to a general public by featuring engaging, dynamic performances from talented young, local poets.
In the competition, student performers respond to a Classic Poem by crafting and performing an Original Poem that echoes elements of the Classic. This dialogue between poets and poems is meant to challenge young poets in their appreciation of poetry. The synthesis of academics and artistry also promises audiences a stimulating exploration of poetry’s broad power.
Students can compete in teams of up to eight or register in the solo performer category. Teams do not have to be high school-based. Home school groups, after school clubs, & similar organizations can compete as long as they adhere to all the rules for traditional schools. Winners receive cash prizes and the opportunity to workshop further work with well-known poets and professors.
