About the Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program

The Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program was created in 2003 by a generous donation from John and Sandy Segerstrom Daniels in honor of legendary wind conductor, Frederick Fennell. The program offers a focused, high-level, quality education to dedicated instrumental music students interested in pursuing advanced studies of wind instruments. Students receive a college-preparatory curriculum, where they take a wide variety of courses, including music theory, musicianship and music history. Students have collaborated with conductors H. Robert Reynolds and Anthony Maiello, and artists such as composer Frank Ticheli.

Student Experience

While a standard school music program will put students in contact with one, maybe two, highly experienced professional musicians, the highly diverse and uniquely qualified faculty members in the Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program offers many perspectives for their students’ music education. Within a single week, a student will come into contact with as many as 8 different teachers in the various areas of music and pedagogy. Students have the opportunity to learn music theory, history, and specifics about their instrument and its performance. The curriculum allows students to enroll in masterclasses, work with an inspiring array of high caliber guest artists, and attend festivals and field trips. Students also audition for the program’s various ensembles and participate in a number of unique and exciting performance opportunities.

  • "Although being in the Wind Studies Program is extremely rigorous, playing in such prestigious ensembles allows you to grow exponentially as a musician in a short amount of time.”
Eve La Puma - Class of 2016
  • "I honed in on my leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team. Collaboration and communication are essential for successful ensemble playing."
Julia Choi - Class of 2015

Preparing Students for the Future

The Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program develops its students to be highly motivated and involved members of society. Upon graduation, students are prepared for admission into a university or arts conservatory program in their chosen field. The skills in music are astounding, but the time-management and responsibilities that a student learns in the program will prepare them for anything.
